Light Engine No.11, Nautilus

Dallas, Tx.

This large scale installation, is the focal point of a prominent business lobby in Dallas, Texas. Comprised of Alanod airfoils, constructed according to the Golden Means ratio, and suspended in Fibonacci sequence, the "engine" is fueled by over 35 flood lamps set to individual controls, allowing for the regulation of light effects accoring to the time of day, season, etc.

This work utilizes the four basic principles of optical physics: reflection, refraction, diffraction and diffusion. As convection currents pass thru the lit glass enclosure, the 94.9% reflective Alanod airfoils react to the changing temperatures by rotating. This rotational movement of over 200 reflective airfoils creates a perpetual 'light show' on the face of the glass. This appearing and dissolving of light, seemingly magical to the viewing audience, is thus firmly rooted in physics.
